Living Well in Ravenna
Ravenna, Seattle · Whole-Home Renovation & Addition · 2020
This classic Ravenna Craftsman was renovated to preserve the character of the original home while creating substantially more functional space for modern family life.
The existing kitchen was too small for the way the homeowners wanted to use it, so Gerry Homes expanded the house with an addition supported by a new steel beam, creating a larger and more functional kitchen. The addition was carefully integrated with the existing architecture so the finished exterior feels original to the home rather than visibly added later.
Inside, new hardwood flooring was laced into the existing floors to create a seamless transition between old and new. Emily Wignall Design carried the Craftsman character into the renovated kitchen, including a custom leaded-glass china cabinet that feels appropriate to the age and architecture of the house.
The lower level received a complete renovation. Uneven basement floors were leveled, the space was comprehensively remodeled, and a new laundry room was created to make the lower level significantly more useful and comfortable.
At the rear of the home, Gerry Homes built an ipe deck directly off the expanded kitchen, extending the new living space outdoors and creating a natural connection between the kitchen and backyard.
The result is a home that functions very differently than it did before, while still reading as the same Ravenna Craftsman from the outside.
For Gerry Homes, renovating an older Seattle home means more than adding square footage. It means understanding what makes the original architecture worth preserving, then making the new construction feel as though it has always belonged there.
